NBISIING
SECONDARY SCHOOL

Rooted in Tradition, Growing Through Education
Nbisiing Secondary School was founded in September 1995, beginning in a rented room with just 18 students, one teacher, one assistant, and a part-time computer instructor. The school emerged from the vision of Nipissing First Nation’s Elders, Chief, and Council, who recognized the importance of Indigenous-controlled education—where the community could guide the learning of its people.
On January 10, 2000, Nbisiing moved into its $3.3 million Education and Community Complex, a milestone that marked the culmination of years of hard work by the Nation’s leaders and community members. This move represented the realization of a long-held dream to have a school within the community that not only provides a high-quality education but also embeds cultural teachings and values in the learning process.

Since then, Nbisiing has grown to enroll more than 120 students and employs 20 full-time staff members. The school offers a holistic education grounded in Anishinaabe traditions, with a focus on Nishnaabemwin (Ojibwe language), land-based learning, and traditional ceremonies. Nbisiing continues to blend these cultural teachings with the Ontario curriculum, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for their futures.

Many of our graduates have gone on to succeed at college and university, while others have successfully entered the workforce. We are incredibly proud of our past graduates, who represent the future of the Nation and are confident that future graduates will carry forward the tradition of excellence and cultural pride.
